It’s finally springtime in Horezu and I couldn’t be happier. The weather has been absolutely glorious these last few days. Tis the season for lingering outside, sitting on park benches, soaking up the sunshine, going of evening walks, going roller skating and drinking fruit flavored beer.
Last weekend, I went to Cabana Balota with some friends and colleges. It was a wonderful weekend and the landscape was stunning. Two years ago, the first time I saw snow in Romania was at Balota. Now, I was back. We had to hike 5km in the deep, puffy snow because we got the truck stuck. As we came around the turn, the cabin, the lake and Varful Balota (Mount Balota) in all its snowcapped glory came into view.
We spent the weekend with great company, chatting, eating, snowball fighting, eating, sleeping, preparing food, eating, taking pictures, eating, hiking, eating, suntanning, and eating. Did I mention eating? It was a relaxing and invigorating weekend and the crisp mountain air did my infirmed lungs some good as it is now speculated that I may have developed Asthma during my time here.
One of the things that I love the most about springtime here is that people venture outside and STAY outside. My neighbors sit on benches in front of their gates, kids play in the street, people go for walks, kids hang out in the park and the center of town is always busy. It’s so unlike the USA and I love it.
Happy spring y’all!
