Oh Sweet Irony! I was approached by the English Department today and was asked if I would help with the upcoming English Language Spelling Bee. Of course, I obliged. I lack the ability to say no and a spelling bee sounds like fun. Next week we will begin putting together categories of words, grade levels, and word lists.
The ironic part of this whole thing is that I can’t spell worth a damn. This is a proven fact! I’ve been spoiled by automatic spell check. I was once given an award in the 7th grade for being the worst speller that Mrs. Shelby had ever taught. I used to spend painstaking hours in my kitchen with my Mom and Nee-Nee studying for weekly spelling tests. Nee-Nee used to bribe me with prizes if I got a 100% on my weekly spelling tests. I’ve had my spelling corrected by a 5th grader. If only blackboards came equipped with spell check. I’ve never made it beyond the first round of a spelling bee.
I laughed as I told the English teachers that I’d love to lend a hand, but I’m an awful speller. This sounds like a fun project and I’m sure the kids will impress me as always. If Mrs. Shelby and Mrs. Trovato could see me now!
