Just Another Day in a-XII-B

I must confess I’m as biased as all get out. I do have a favorite class, or more like three favorite classes. I see all of them on Tuesdays. Aside from being long, Tuesday is my favorite day of the week. Allow me to introduce you to a typical, well actually, a not so typical day with Vale and I’s 12th grade; a-XII-b. This is the last week of the semester so most class periods have been spent filling the class catalogue with grades so the semester averages can be calculated. As we were walking to class we were greeted by two students from a-XII-b wearing Lady Gaga-ish sunglasses. I’m not entirely sure why they were wearing them, but it brought a smile to my face. When we entered the classroom, music was blaring from speakers set up in the back and some students had their faces buried behind laptop screens. Vale asked what was going on and the class confessed that it was “Disco a-XII-b”. Vale laughed and asked them to turn down the music. An agreement was made. The music could stay on if it remained on low and if the class would work on an essay. One of the boys in the class brought one of those metal puzzles. Two nails that are twisted together and if you move them in a certain way, they will become untangled. He gave it to Vale and I to try to solve. Vale was determined to solve it and after several tries, succeeded. I cheated. I saw Vale solve it, so I knew the solution when it was my turn. Vale took her place at the desk and started to work on the semester grades while the class worked on an essay. For the essay, the students had to pretend they were someone famous, important, or a boss of some kind and write a monologue about their life. This is a very creative class, so I knew there would be some humorous answers. About half way through the class, some of the students began turning in their essays. The first one I read was Alex’s. The first three words on the page were “I am God.” I started to crack up. In Alex’s world, he is God and he destroyed all music except for heavy metal. Everyone lives in a pierced and tattooed paradise. I’ve got to give him points for having such a succinct vision of life if he were the master of the universe. His desk mate’s answer was equally amusing… “I am Chuck Noris.” I’ve got to give this class credit. They aim to make us laugh with their answers and they certainly do not disappoint! As the class wore on, the volume of the music was getting increasingly louder. As Vale finished up the last grade in the catalogue, a popular folk-type song came on the play list. Jan, who had been hiding behind the laptop during most of the class began to serenade us. It was pretty awesome. The song was one of my favorites and the volume was up so loud that the drawers of the teacher’s desk were shaking open. Classic. As Vale and I departed the class, a group of students had gathered around the last desk and were singing along with the play list. There is never a boring day in a-XII-b, that’s for sure. They are a great class. It’s so hard to believe that we are already rolling into the second semester of 2011. Wow, one semester left. Someone slow down time, please!
